Kreuzberg is the place where West Berlin's immigration story is easiest to taste. From the 1960s, workers came here from Turkey, then from the Balkans and the Middle East, and later from all over the world. Many of them opened bakeries, grocery shops and small restaurants, and these businesses still shape the neighbourhood today.
On this tour we walk through Kreuzberg and stop at the places that tell this story best. Some are family shops that have been here for decades. Others are independent food businesses opened by people who came to Berlin more recently. We visit two markets: Markthalle Neun, now home to local producers, and the Turkish Market on Maybachufer.
Along the way you taste Turkish food that is much more than döner (manti, for example), Bosnian burek, Texas-style barbecue made in Berlin, North Sea seafood, fresh Italian pasta, spirits distilled in Kreuzberg, cheese from the Spreewald and beer from the Allgäu. Between stops we talk about street art, about how the neighbourhood has changed, and about the people behind each place.
We know almost every corner on this route and most of the people working there. If this is your first time in Berlin, this is the tour we recommend to start with.
Before you come: come hungry, because there are 5–6 tastings, enough for a big lunch. Wear comfortable shoes, and bring a Berlin AB ticket (not included).
