Charlottenburg is the classic West Berlin. While the city was divided, this was its centre: elegant streets, old cafés and restaurants, and shops that have been run by the same families for generations.
On this tour we walk through the neighbourhood and visit the places that kept this tradition alive. We sit down in a historic restaurant for regional German cooking, such as Sauerbraten with dumplings and red cabbage, with a local beer. We stop at a cheesemonger who sells only German cheese, taste Königsberg marzipan, and finish at a local market with cheese, salami and apple juice from the region.
Between stops we talk about West Berlin during the division: how people lived here and what they ate. We also look at how the neighbourhood has kept its character while the rest of the city changed.
If you want to understand German food beyond sausage and beer, this is the tour.
